Leaving home and moving to a new environment is a time of excitement and anxiety for most of us. Those anxieties can be greater for people who have a chronic medical condition like epilepsy and, who on top of that, also have a learning disability. It’s tough for their parents, too.

Independence means different things to us all. One of our guiding principles at Independence Homes is to try and establish what independence means for each of our service users, whatever their level of ability.

Robin’s story is real, even though Robin isn’t his real name. Robin’s background, though, is one of the reasons that Independence Homes exists.

Despite advances in epilepsy treatment, 30% of people diagnosed with the condition have seizures which are not controlled.
